The PLA’s Participation in UN Peacekeeping Operations

ASIA FORUM with Major Zhang Bo

PhD Candidate, PLA Academy of Military Science (AMS)

Thursday, November 25, 2010, 10:00-11:30

As an important developing country and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China exerts a strong influence over UN Peacekeeping Operations. Although it has contributed a lot of financial and personnel support China can the still make significant improvements to its peacekeeping mandate. With this in mind, the possible role of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will be investigated.

Taking the PLA’s participation in peacekeeping operations as its focus, the following aspects will be analysed:

  • Past: China’s policy variation on UN peacekeeping operations and the PLA’s history of participation.
  • Present: the PLA’s current participation in UNPKOs along with its underlying motives, principles, functions, and features.
  • Future prospects: expectations, trends, obstacles and challenges.
