The Arab Spring and its Implications for Israel

SILK ROAD FORUM with Mr. Hirsh Goodman

The Arab Spring and its Implications for Israel

Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 10:00 – 12:00

In the last 12 months, the Arab world has been shaken by popular demonstrations, upheavals and revolutions, the conclusions of which are still uncertain. While some believe that the Arab Spring marks the beginning of a new era of democracy in the Middle East, many others warn of the breakdown of stability and rule of law. In addition, more than one hundred states are currently demanding that a Palestinian state be established on the 1967-borders. At the same time, Israel is facing deep internal cleavages and a growing demographic problem. Mr. Hirsch Goodman will identify and discuss the main challenges facing Israel today, and show us why the perpetual question ‘can Israel survive?’ might be the wrong one to ask.

Mr. Hirsch Goodman is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) at Tel Aviv University, Israel, where he directs the Bronfman Program on Media Strategy. His main areas of research are the interface between policymaking and media, and Israeli public diplomacy. Prior to joining INSS, Goodman was the vice president of the Jerusalem Post, and in 1990 he founded The Jerusalem Report and was its editor-in-chief for nine years. He has also been the Israel correspondent for the Sunday Times of London. In the mid-1980s Goodman was the Strategic Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. In 2011, Goodman published the book ‘The Anatomy of Israel’s Survival’ where he re-evaluates the question of Israel’s survival in light of recent developments in the Middle East and within Israel.
