Approaching and Counteracting Contemporary Organized Crime – Conceptual Flaws, Pitfalls and Challenges

Transnational organized crime is to be regarded as one of the greatest global threats to human security and the development of open and democratic societies. It is imperative for states to develop counterstrategies based on sound knowledge of the problem at hand. Prof. Dr. Gert Vermeulen gives an introduction to the research of organized crime and its recent findings, as well as its shortcomings in terms of data collection, definition issues and reporting problems.

Prof. Dr. Gert Vermeulen, Lic. Iur., Aggr. Law, Ph.D. Law, is the Director of the Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy (IRCP) at Ghent University, Belgium. He is also the head of the department of Criminal Law and Criminology at Ghent University and holds the position as extraordinary professor at Maastricht University. Gert Vermeulen is involved in numerous research projects (more than 20) over the past years, inter alia in the field of criminal law and drug policy. He acts as a consultant to the Council of Europe and the European Commission in issues related to organized crime, trafficking in human beings and smuggling of persons.
