ISDP FORUM with Professor Mohammed Benhammou

European media provides extensive coverage to the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean. Yet one underlying causes of the problem receive less attention: the ongoing instability across the Sahel. The region is awash with terrorism and insurgency that was caused in part by the destabilization of Libya following the western intervention there, and which helped cause the near-collapse of Mali as well as instability in Algeria. Morocco and Tunisia have so far withstood the pressure. Professor Mohammed Benhammou, from the University Mohammed visits ISDP on June 4 to discuss the current situation.

Professor Mohammed Benhammou is Professor at the University Mohamed V – Souissi Rabat, Morocco, and an international expert on issues of security and terrorism. He holds a Doctorate in Law, a degree in Political Science and has prepared a doctoral 3rd Cycle in International Relations. He has previously held the position of Inspector in Financial Control in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Morroco, and that of Finance Inspector at the General Control of State Spending Commitments. Professor Mohammed Benhammou has also been Chargé d’Etudes and adviser to the Minister of Administrative Affairs. He is the current President of the Moroccan Observatory for Citizenship and Democracy (OMCD), and the Moroccan Centre for Strategic Studies (CMES).
