Niklas Swanström was interviewed by Yle on the cooperation between China, Japan and South Korea against Trump’s tariffs

April 8, 2025: Niklas Swanström, ISDP’s Executive Director, was interviewed by Yle on the cooperation between China, Japan, and South Korea against Trump’s tariffs.

“There will be a need to shift trade away from the US to other actors. And I think there is a great consensus between the countries on this,” says Niklas Swanström.

According to Swanström, Japan and South Korea are walking a tightrope to diversify trade without clashing with the United States, but at the same time they can also benefit from a closer relationship with China.

“The closer you are to China economically, the more influence you can have politically,” says Niklas Swanström.
