The Mission of Sino-US Strategic Relations: Coping with the Era of Uncertainty

ASIA FORUM with Prof. Wang Yiwei

Center for American Studies, Fudan University in Shanghai

Friday, October 23, 2009, 10:00-11:30

As two non-typical nation states, China and the United States represent two kinds of civilizations: the East and the West; the developing and developed; the emerging power and status quo hegemony. To build the harmonious relations between them and go beyond the zero-sum game such as “China’s rise” vs. “America’s decline” have been the missions of Sino-US strategic relations. With the global financial crisis and climate change bringing an era of uncertainty, what are the new missions of Sino-U.S. relations? Will the relationship between China and the US shape the 21st Century or being shaped by the globalization? Will the so-called ”G2” be the future tense and what it means for Europe?

Prof. Wang Yiwei is currently a scholar-in-residence of the Mission of the People’s Republic China to the EU (political analyst). He was adjunct deputy director of the Department of American Studies of the Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS, 2004), Fox Fellow of Yale Center for International and Area Studies (2000-2001) and Korea Foundation-Yonsei distinguished visiting professor (2005). He received his Ph.D. in 2001 from the Department of International Politics, Fudan University. Prof. Wang has published more than eighty academic articles and six books. He also published more than 300 commentaries and was interviewed for more than 300 times.
