ISDP-USIP Conference on the implications of Sino-Russian cooperation amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine

December 11, 2024: Last week, on December 4, 2024, ISDP had the honor of hosting a conference in Stockholm in collaboration with the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) on the impact of Sino-Russian cooperation amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Since the war in Ukraine in February 2022 Russia has continued the war, despite the many consequences that followed the start of the war. Simultaneously, Sino-Russian relations have strengthened and remained firm, causing concerns for the West on how such ties currently affect, and could affect the prolonged conflict in Ukraine.

The conference offered a thought-provoking exploration of the evolving dynamics of the Sino-Russian partnership and its implications for Ukraine in the context of Russia’s invasion. Key themes included the challenges of hybrid strategies, the role of economic statecraft, and the critical need for unified Western responses.

The conference focused on the following topics:

  • Sino-Russian relations amidst the Russo-Ukrainian war, a lever for peace or attrition
  • Can Chinese economic interests guide Russia towards and end of the war in Ukraine
  • Reconstruction of Ukraine, why should we allow China to be involved

We would like to thank all participants for their important contributions to this discussion!
