Jagannath Panda spoke to TVP World about how the BRICS Summit underscores the global divide
October 22, 2024: Jagannath Panda, Head of the Stockholm Center for South Asian and Indo-Pacific Affairs, spoke to TVP World about how the BRICS Summit underscores the global divide.
China and Russia aim to promote the BRICS as a credible (political) multipolar organization. Expanding BRICS serves the global agendas of China and Russia, and it helps them to stay connected with the Global South countries strongly. This is important at a time when the divide between Global South and Global North is expanding, and that suites China, and more importantly, Russia, since Moscow has been isolated internationally after the attack on Ukraine. Russia aims to solidify its contact with the Global South and a China-Russia strategic parity within BRICS serves their global anti-west agenda.
India acts as a balancer within the BRICS. Besides, there is a clear division between the Chinese and Indian outlook on the Global South that is visible both within and outside the BRICS. China aims to have a unilateral leadership role in the Global South by using the BRICS as a platform whereas India aims to have a shared leadership platform in the Global South.
