Mats Engman in Svenska Dagbladet on Putin’s visit to North Korea

June 18, 2024: Mats Engman, Head of the Stockholm Korea Center and a Distinguished Military Fellow at ISDP, was interviewed by Svenska Dagbladet on Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea.

“Of course, Putin is going to North Korea because he wants something out of it,” says Mats Engman.

He believes that Putin’s visit to North Korea will escalate tensions further – with a developed North Korean military capability being met by continued rearmament from South Korea with intensified exercises with the U.S. Recently, North Korea has also been sending ”trash balloons” to South Korea, which has responded with thunderous broadcasts from loudspeakers at the border.

“There is nervousness in the whole system.”
