Mats Engman was quoted by Politiken on Europe’s reaction on North Korea participating in Russia’s war

November 11, 2024: Mats Engman, Head of the Stockholm Korea Center and Distinguished Military Fellow at ISDP, was interviewed by the Danish newspaper Politiken on Europe’s reaction on North Korea participating in Russia’s war.

“From the start of the war, Russia said it would cross a red line if NATO forces directly supported Ukraine. But now Russia itself is receiving direct support from a third country that has troops on the ground. So either Russia’s red line has been lifted, or we are operating with two different principles – one for Russia and another for the West,” says Mats Engman.

“There are many options – from lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s use of weapons to ultimately doing as North Korea does and directly supporting Ukraine with combat troops. We need to clearly mark that this crosses a line. We cannot wait for ‘big brother’ in Washington, because this is about our security in Europe. Yet we remain silent.”
