Niklas Swanström was interviewed by TT on China’s military exercise around Taiwan during Easter
April 13, 2023: Niklas Swanström, ISDP’s Executive Director, was interviewed by the Swedish news agency TT on China’s military exercise around Taiwan during Easter.
“The exercise may be over, but the pressure on Taiwan is not,” says Niklas Swanström.
“However, I don’t think it’s necessarily the big island in Taiwan that will be attacked, but rather the islands around it. They will increase this pressure. They will show that they are serious, and this will result in military confrontations. A full-scale invasion at this point is not impossible but, at the same time, not the most likely.”
“When I talk to Taiwanese colleagues, they say that there is nothing new in this development, but that it is getting worse and worse because the pressure is continuously increasing. And then you have to look at the purpose of this, to isolate Taiwan,” explains Niklas Swanström.
