The Influence of Sino-Russian Cooperation on Finland’s Energy Policy – Associated Senior Research Fellow Mia Landauer visited ISDP for a seminar

On March 10, 2025, Mia Landauer, a senior researcher at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, Finland, as well as an associated senior research fellow at ISDP, visited the Institute for a presentation on the timely topic of “The influence of Sino-Russian Cooperation on Finland’s Energy Policy”.

Her presentation related to the upcoming ISDP book project “The “New” Frontier: Sino-Russian cooperation in the Arctic environment and geopolitical implications.”, edited by Niklas Swanström et al.

Mia Landauer focuses on the following research questions:

  • How does Sino-Russian cooperation influence energy policies of the Nordic Arctic, particularly Finland?
  • What are Finland’s strategies to mitigate risks or leverage opportunities arising from the Sino-Russian cooperation?
  • How should Finland balance economic cooperation, energy security and environmental sustainability in the Arctic?

During the ISDP seminar, colleagues discussed how geopolitical tensions are necessitating a rethinking of energy security and how the sustainable and independent energy transition presents several land use challenges. The discussion also highlighted the potential of Nordic cooperation to reduce the reliance on Chinese minerals by developing EU-based supply chains.

Many thanks to Dr. Landauer for the insightful presentation and discussion. We are looking forward to the upcoming book and research projects.
